Types of houseboats in Alleppey:

Most tourists choose private houseboats (there are two types), typically for a 1-day/1-night stay. During this time, the houseboats float in the backwaters for a few hours. The rest of the time, usually from around 5-6 in the evening until morning, they remain stationary in the water.

Shared houseboats involve sharing a larger houseboat with another couple or family. These are less popular and are chosen mainly for very tight budgets.
